Australia Hits the 50th Public Electric Vehicle DC Fast Charging Site Milestone

· Installations at Pokolbin validate commitment to an EV future from both local governments across Australia and the private sector

· Milestone achieved as Select Committee for Electric Vehicles begins examination of the use and manufacture of EVs in Australia

Brisbane, Australia – October 10, 2018 – Australia has hit an important milestone in the drive towards an electric vehicle future with the installation and operation of the nation’s 50th publicly-available 50kW DC Fast Charging location in the Hunter Valley Gardens, Pokolbin.

Tritium’s Veefil-RT 50kW DC Fast Chargers were installed by the NRMA at Pokolbin as part of its $10m electric vehicle fast charging network rollout.

“It’s been proven time and time again across the globe that when the charging infrastructure is in place for electric vehicles, you’ll see an uptick in the number of EVs on the road and in showrooms,” said Chris Hewitt, head of sales for Australia, Tritium. “We now have a significant number of publicly-available chargers across the country with more to come.”

Tritium, founded in Brisbane, is a world leader in fast-charging station technology with deployments in 26 countries. In Australia alone, Tritium has more than 70 per cent market share.

The milestone installation comes during a Senate inquiry into the use and manufacture of electric vehicles in Australia, with a report expected in December this year.

“Tritium’s success is a timely reminder that we have the smarts and skilled labour force here in Australia to be an advanced manufacturing powerhouse,” said Senator Tim Storer, chair of the Select Committee on Electric Vehicles. “Imagine what they could achieve if we had a national strategy to support the development of the EV industry here in Australia. I hope my inquiry will prompt the Federal Government to be more proactive, so that companies like Tritium can more fully realise the benefits on the electric vehicle transition.”

“While hitting this milestone is a great achievement, the country still has a long way to go with the need for hundreds of new DC charging locations,” said Hewitt. “Federal Government support and incentives would certainly help further drive electric vehicle penetration into the Australian market, but industry and local governments across Australia aren’t prepared to wait for it.

“They see the tangible benefits electric vehicles bring to the environment and to trade, and they’ve been overwhelming in their enthusiasm to roll out the necessary infrastructure.”

The NRMA’s electric vehicle network rollout is expected to be completed in 2019 and aims to install approximately 40 DC Fast Chargers across New South Wales and the ACT. The charger at the Hunter Valley Gardens is the fourth in the proposed rollout.

Among the 50 charging locations are the 18 deployed for the Queensland Electric Super Highway, the world’s longest electric super highway in a single state which allows tourists to travel from Coolangatta to Cairns and from Brisbane to Toowoomba in a low or zero emissions vehicle.

The continued development of infrastructure has also attracted the interest and support of electric vehicle manufacturers, including Australia’s number three brand, Hyundai:

“The more infrastructure we see being put into place, the more we’re encouraged to introduce new electric vehicles into the Australian market,” said Scott Grant, Chief Operating Officer, Hyundai Motor Company Australia.

“Australia’s 50th DC recharging location is an important milestone for the industry and for the country – it gives us renewed confidence in the lead-up to the launch of our new IONIQ EV in November.”

Tritium’s Veefil-RTs ensure drivers can fully charge their vehicle to 80 per cent within 30 minutes on average for any EV with a CHAdeMO or CCS2 socket. Chargers will accommodate most makes and models of EVs available in Australia.

Brisbane, Australia – October 12, 2018 – Tritium Pty Ltd’s global success in the electric vehicle fast-charger market has been recognised with the Premier of Queensland’s Exporter of the Year Award and the Manufacturing  Award. The Awards were announced last night (October 11, 2018) at a gala dinner in Brisbane.

As a winner of the Queensland Awards, Brisbane-based Tritium automatically progresses as a national finalist in the next Australian Export Awards.

The Premier of Queensland’s Export Awards acknowledge the contribution that exporting businesses make to the state’s economy through job creation and increased prosperity in the community. The Queensland Exporter of the Year Award and the Manufacturing Export Award were accepted by David Finn, Co-Founder and Chief Executive Officer of Tritium.

“While the Australian EV market continues to expand, global markets, particularly in parts of Europe and in the US, are far advanced and so 98 per cent of our business is exported,” said Finn. “It has been very satisfying to compete so successfully on the global stage and I thank all our team and our supporters in Australia for making this possible.

2018 has been a standout year for Tritium with:

· The unveiling of its world-beating Veefil-PK high-power charger which can add 150KM of range to an EV in just five minutes

· A major deal with the IONITY network to deliver the Veefil-PK to 100 sites across Europe.

· The installation of TRITIUM’S 50TH FAST EV CHARGER IN AUSTRALIA – a milestone for the local EV industry

Tritium EV chargers are deployed in 26 countries and in Australia alone, the company has more than 70 per cent market share.

Following the successful export and installation of a dozen HPCs (High-power chargers) to a pilot site in Germany as part of the IONITY network – which aims to install 400 sites in total across Europe – Tritium was chosen by IONITY as a technology partner to supply up to 400 chargers across a further 100 sites in Germany, France, UK, Norway and Sweden. IONITY is a joint venture of the BMW Group, Daimler AG, Ford Motor Company and the Volkswagen Group including Audi and Porsche.

To cater for Tritium’s continued expansion internationally and nationally, the company is expanding its operation in Australia.

“We now have more than 200 staff and counting and are expanding our Veefil-PK operations in Brisbane, as well as having offices in the US and Europe,” said Finn.  “We continue to design and manufacture all our chargers in Brisbane and we’re proud to call Queensland home.”

In addition to Tritium’s success in high-performance chargers, the company continues to lead the way in the 50kW DC Fast Charger market, locally and globally. Earlier this year Tritium signed deals to supply at least 40 Veefil RT-50kW DC fast chargers for the NRMA’s charging network rollout across New South Wales in Australia, and to supply 12 Veefil-RTs to NKM Mobilitas Ltd. (Mobiliti) in Hungary.

Tritium, founded and headquartered in Brisbane, is a world leader in fast-charging station technology with deployments in 26 countries. IN AUSTRALIA ALONE, TRITIUM HAS MORE THAN 70 PER CENT MARKET SHARE.

The company took home the awards for its latest EV charging solution: the Veefil-PK 175-475kW high-power charger (HPC). It can deliver 150km of range to an electric vehicle in just five minutes of charging. With the capability to deliver up to 475kW it is the most powerful charger in the world today.

Following the successful export and installation of a dozen HPCs to a pilot site in Germany as part of the IONITY network – which aims to install 400 sites in total across Europe – Tritium was chosen by IONITY as a technology partner to supply up to 400 chargers across a further 100 sites across Germany, France, UK, Norway and Sweden. IONITY is a joint venture of the BMW Group, Daimler AG, Ford Motor Company and the Volkswagen Group including Audi and Porsche.

“Our company started out when three young students – myself, David Finn and James Kennedy – met at the University of Queensland, and it’s been amazing to watch this company grow and lead the world when it comes to EV infrastructure solutions,” said Sernia. “These awards are simply validation of all of the hard work every member of our staff has put in since we last won a Lord Mayor’s Business Award two years ago.

“We now have more than 250 staff and growing and offices in the US and Europe, yet we still design and manufacture everything in Brisbane and we’re proud to call it home.

“With the unveiling of our HPC this year, we’re confident this is only the beginning for Tritium and for Brisbane’s role as a manufacturing and innovation hub for Australia and the world.”

In addition to Tritium’s agreement with IONITY, the company continues to lead the way in the 50kW DC fast charger market in Australia and around the world. This year alone, Tritium has signed deals to supply at least 40 Veefil RT-50kW DC fast chargers for the NRMA’s charging network rollout across the state of New South Wales in Australia, and a separate deal to supply 12 Veefil-RTs to NKM Mobilitas Ltd. (Mobiliti) in Hungary.

Recently, Gilbarco Veeder-Root, the worldwide technology leader for retail and commercial fuelling operations, announced it had taken a minority investment in Tritium to enable it to accelerate a number of strategic activities, including operational expansion in Europe and the USA to keep pace with a fast-growing market.

ABOUT EVS31 & EVTeC2018
Countries around the world are pinning much hope on EVs and are investing much effort in popularizing them, as a means of dealing with global warming problems, extricating themselves from their dependence on oil, and addressing energy conservation. As part of this, along with innovations in batteries and other component technologies, the evolution of EVs is being steadily promoted. Furthermore, in recent years, in addition to partnerships with electric power systems, we have also begun exploring the potential to create value and provide services based on new perspectives such as “intelligence,” and “connectivity” on the back of advances in information technology. It is our hope, therefore, that EVS 31 will serve as a forum for international discussions on topics of “new mobility” in the form of next-generation EVs, and a “smart society”—a new futuristic society carved out around this new mobility.
